Upper Sixth student, Jacob Burke has made some fantastic progress in gaining work experience to help him pursue a future career in engineering.
At Carmel we offer work experience placements alongside curriculum study, to help our students gain real-world experience. After speaking to our Work Experience Coordinator, Victoria Moran, Jacob has managed to gain placements at Jaguar Land Rover, Daresbury Labs and Sellafield Ltd.
Whilst at Jaguar Land Rover, Jacob spent a week in the Manufacturing Parts & Logistics department. His role involved ordering new car parts and sequencing cars through the factory. He also learnt about how cars are sent abroad as well as how parts are transported through the factory.
Meanwhile, his time at Daresbury Labs allowed him to work with the Magnets and Radiation Sources group. Jacob found out about how they use large magnets to manipulate beams in particle accelerators. He also learnt about their designs for new accelerators for labs worldwide.
Sellafield Ltd offered insights into: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering. Each module involved a design-based task (e.g. designing pipe systems, bridges, waste processing robots) and explained how each discipline works to clean up the main Sellafield site in Cumbria.
The diversity of each role allowed Jacob the opportunity to explore different areas of engineering. He was also able to see how the theory he has learnt in lessons applies to the industry. Overall, Jacob said “I definitely recommend the Work Experience and Careers support available at Carmel. It has enabled me to gain valuable experience relevant to my future career, that I couldn’t just learn in a classroom.”
