At Advanced Level you will be introduced to a variety of experiences that employ a range of traditional and new media processes and
techniques appropriate to your level of study.
• Component 1: Personal Investigation (60%) A practical investigation, supported by written material, into an idea, issue, concept or theme leading to a finished outcome or related outcomes.
• Component 2: Externally set assignment (40%) A choice of eight questions to be used as starting points with one being selected. Supported by preparatory work presented in sketch books, journals, models and mounted sheets, along with 15 hours of examination time.
This course develops a wide range of transferable skills that are sought by employers and universities. Many of our students take up places at the UK’s leading Universities for every kind of art and design specialism. Some students also take up places on Carmel’s UAL Foundation Diploma.
• Access HE courses including Illustration, Animation, Games Design, Graphic Design and Architecture
• Use your creativity, problem solving, organisational and communication skills to access a variety of other courses where your skills will be beneficial e.g. Science and Medicine, the Social Sciences, Languages as well as Business related courses.
• Many students go on to study at prestigious universities e.g. Goldsmiths, University of the Arts London, Falmouth, Leeds, Edinburgh and Glasgow
Our former students have gone on to do amazing things with many working in the industry at places like ITV, ASOS, Net-a-Porter, Everton FC and Missguided – update these to ASOS, Liverpool Football Club, Ralph Lauren, JD Sports, The HUT Group and Boohoo. Students have gone on to work in a variety of areas for example: Architecture, Advertising, Branding, Events Promotion, Animation, Magazine, App Design, Illustration, User Experience (UX) Design.
Something I love about Graphic Design is the amount of creative freedom you get. There are barely any limitations on what you get to create and you are really free to experiment with anything you’d like. The resources provided are very varied too, they help you in developing amazing project pieces.
The Graphic Design teachers are also really kind and supportive. They are always there and willing to help with anything you need and they really feel like someone you can talk to about anything.
Graphic Design is my favourite subject. I love the variety of software and techniques we learn. We are given freedom to explore our own art styles and personal interests, and what they can become in the world of graphics. The feedback of my work is always very useful and personal, which makes me feel very supported in my classes.
I have entered art competitions, given as opportunities by the college, such as designing a logo for an art exhibition for the World of Glass. I have also taken part in supporting online small businesses by making logos and advertising designs for them for free using the skills and confidence I have gained in Graphic Design.
Graphic Design has helped me learn that my work can be more than art and I can achieve a lot, regardless of my level of art skills.
In Graphic Design I love how experimental we are able to be and to have the freedom and ability to bring our own brands to life. From designing our own book covers to creating my own brand to creating the likes of packaging.
I really felt like I was able to be creative and have experience of what it would be like to design my own products and brand label.
Since studying A level Graphic Design at Carmel it has fuelled my passion for the subject, having come from doing Fine Art GCSE I wanted to explore something different implementing my other interest, such as using computer aided design.
In the first year, I learned many skills such as how to use different digital design software such as Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. I also enjoyed the briefs set, similar to ones used by real life companies for Graphic Designers, where the task is to create a brand image, logo and advertising for a specific company. I also learned how to create many different realistic outcomes such as book covers, app designs and branding for posters or leaflets.
The thing I liked the most was the many different opportunities the subject has such as trips, college competitions and external competitions within the local area. Graphic Design has taken me on a journey where I have improved more and more as a designer, where I feel my work has become more realistic and to an industry standard which will help me when looking to make my next steps to achieving my University degree.
Overall studying Graphic Design at Carmel will be an experience I will look back on positively, as I believe I would never be where I am looking to be in the future if it wasn’t for my subject teacher Dave and the course as a whole.
