English subjects are challenging but are an excellent preparation both for university and your future career which demand reasoning, analysis and discussion.
Obvious careers include, for instance, journalism, sales, teaching, management, administration, information management, publishing and careers in public services.
The English Literature classroom is a time capsule of revolutionary literature movements and periods ranging from renaissance drama to Victorian poetry.
The lessons feel like exciting discussions where every opinion is welcomed in a friendly and supportive environment, it is always evident that staff are very passionate about what they’re teaching.
I have loved my experience of A Level English Literature at Carmel – from The Literature Society enrichment to the constant support and reassurance from the tutors, it is such a welcoming and encouraging environment.
The passion for English Literature from everyone within the department is infectious and the conversational-style of lessons provides a really positive setting for everyone to have their ideas heard and allows for constructive debates that help sculpt a deeper understanding of the texts we study.
The determination of the tutors to help us to prosper has inspired me to work hard and take every opportunity provided to me in order to succeed in the subject that I love.

“I enjoyed my time at Carmel and was part of the High Achievers+ Programme. Tutors were ambitious for me and for others and helped us to achieve these goals through a network of multi- faceted support.
“I am currently working as an educator on the Teach First programme, tackling inequality in schools in Merseyside. I graduated from Durham in 2023 with a first class degree and was a representative there for the 93% Club, an organisation formed to aid future outcomes for state-school students.”
