Classical Civilisation

The ultimate humanities subject, Classical Civilisation is uniquely interdisciplinary, allowing you to develop an independent critical approach to literature, art, history, philosophy, and religion. Highly regarded by both universities and employers, Classical Civilisation enables you, through the immersive worlds of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, to gain an informed world view and enriched cultural awareness.

Entry Requirements

Grade 5s in GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature plus grade 4 in GCSE History if studied.

What you will study:

The World of the Hero: Epic stories of mythology and adventure through Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid.
Greek Art: Reflections of classical Greek identity through the visual storytelling of sculpture, architecture, and ceramics.
Greek Religion: An exploration of the core beliefs systems of ancient Greece, including mythology, the relationship between mortals and immortals, rituals and sacrifices, and hero cults.

You will develop sought-after transferable skills in critical analysis, evaluation, visual literacy, judgement-making, and independent research. This diverse subject particularly complements History, English Literature, Politics, Theology, Philosophy & Ethics and Art subjects.
