Former student, Nick Mars, returned to college today to inspire and mentor our students.

Nick is in his second year of an Engineering Degree Apprenticeship at Sellafield Ltd. He is now an official volunteer at Carmel College. He comes into college to offer application help and advice to students interested in Engineering Degree Apprenticeships. Today he also held an Engineering Apprenticeship session for our Lower Sixth students, along with Sellafield colleague, Josh Morris.

Whilst studying at Carmel, Nick decided on a degree apprenticeship for his next step. He received help and advice from his Personal Achievement Tutor and our Work Experience Coordinator, Victoria Moran. The market for degree apprenticeships is very competitive, so he knew completing a notable amount of work experience would help him achieve his goal. This experience increased his knowledge of how to be successful in engineering as well as expanding his CV.

Nick secured a five-week placement during the summer at NGF Europe. During this time, he completed a research task and produced a detailed report on the development of a new technology.

When we caught up with Nick he said “NGF Europe liked my work and I was able to use my knowledge and experience in my Sellafield Ltd. interview. One of the key factors to my success was my ability to talk about my work experience as it helped me to stand out against other candidates. If you are looking into a Degree Apprenticeship, I would highly recommend that you take advantage of all help and advice available at Carmel. Also, you should accept as many opportunities as possible. The support I received certainly helped me!”
