Last week a team of Lower Sixth Chemistry students took part in the National Finals of the Young Analyst Competition after winning the regional competition back in March.
Held at the University of Manchester, the competition included twenty other teams from across the UK. Teams were required to take 7 practical analytical tasks based on the periodic table which tested students’ understanding and accuracy as well as promoting team work and safety in the laboratory. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to use university standard chemical equipment and conduct practical exercises that aren’t part of the A Level curriculum.
At the end of the competition, students were treated to the ‘Flash Bang Show’ led by Dr Frank Mair who performed some explosive demonstrations and talked about different aspects of Chemistry. Unfortunately, team Carmel didn’t win the national final, but the day proved to be very exciting and was a fantastic opportunity for our students to witness the applications of Chemistry in real-life contexts.
Team member, Yasmin Al-Zuhairi said: “Winning the Merseyside heat and participating in the national final is such a great achievement for us and we are proud to have represented Carmel College. Participating in these competitions has greatly supported our A Level Chemistry curriculum and will give us an advantage when doing future practicals and applying for university.”
