Congratulations to Carmel student, Eva Carroll, for winning the Liverpool elections and becoming a Member of the UK Youth Parliament!
Eva, age 17, and a member of the college’s Student Council, is studying A Levels in Politics, History and English Literature. She has attended Liverpool Schools’ Parliament since she was 13 and has been a Deputy Member of the UK Youth Parliament for 18 months. This has given her the opportunity to bring the issues affecting the young people of Liverpool to the attention of the Education Select Committee.
The UK Youth Parliament enables those aged 11-18 to have a voice on matters affecting young people. On receiving the news that she had been elected as a Member of the UK Youth Parliament, Eva said “I was really proud and the morning after, I couldn’t help but smile as I was walking through the city to get the train. It’s an absolute privilege and I love the city.”
In college, Eva has already secured the provision of free sanitary products in college toilets and she has also founded the Feminist Discussion Group. This enables fellow students to participate in engaging discussions focusing on important topics within today’s society and highlighting the role that feminism plays.
Away from her studies, she has set about influencing the decision makers in Liverpool to eradicate period poverty across the city. “Period Poverty and stigma is such a massive, universal issue throughout the world” commented Eva. “So being able to make an impact within the community to help people just like me would be a dream come true.” Also on her manifesto, is her aim to secure more affordable transport for young people and she is also scrutinising the Council’s work in regard to mental health services and the knife crime epidemic.
Plan International’s Youth Advisory Panel
Eva is also a member of Plan International’s Youth Advisory Panel so she also has experience of bringing issues affecting young people, to the forefront of global campaigns. She recently gave a speech (pictured), as the official Menstruation Representative for Plan International, to combat period poverty, stigma and lack of education.
Eva’s future plans
Later this year Eva will accompany other members of the Youth Parliament to speak in the House of Commons during UK Parliament Week on 8th November 2019.
Eva is a determined young lady who wants to make a difference to people’s lives and we will definitely be hearing more about her work in the future! Congratulations once again Eva and best wishes for your continued success!
