Our A Level History students had the pleasure of welcoming David Laven from the University of Nottingham to college to speak about the Unification of Italy. His talk focussed on the struggle to create a united Italian identity, Brigands War and Trasformismo following Italian unity in 1861.
David comes from a family of Italian Historians and teaches1400 to the 20th-century history, he says the best thing about teaching History is the students.
“It’s very easy to see education as a one-way process, in which experts tell people what they should be thinking, but very often a student will come with a different perspective and I learn from young people. I find it incredibly refreshing.”
In class, our students have used David’s lectures on MASSOLIT to help aid their studies and have come to see him as a bit of a celebrity. We’d like to thank David for visiting us and taking the time to inspire the next generation of Carmel Historians!
