Patrick Alcantara, Foundation Governor

Patrick was appointed as a Foundation Governor in 2023. He is Strategic Customer Insight Lead for AXA UK and Ireland with a professional background in research and data science. As well as holding certified membership of the Market Research Society, Patrick has a diploma in Business Continuity Management as well as a Masters in Lifelong Learning. Prior to moving to the UK, Patrick was a teacher in a Catholic secondary school in the Philippines.

Brother Benedict (Paul Foy), Foundation Governor

Brother Ben was appointed as a Foundation Governor in March 2024.  Ben joined the De La Salle Brothers in 1963 and has lived his whole vocational ministry in education as a teacher, counsellor, trustee and chaplain across a variety of educational establishments.  His qualifications include a Batchelor of Education and Masters in both Counselling Psychology and Pastoral Ministry.  Over the years, Ben has held office in various European Lasallian Commissions and has also supported groups on their pilgrimage to Lourdes as both a leader and chaplain.  In addition, Ben has extensive governance experience in the education sector having served as a governor on the boards of 12 different Lasallian, Local Authority and Diocesan organisations, including as Chair and Vice Chair of Governors.  Actively supporting three local parishes, Ben currently acts as an official lay funeral minister.

 

Sarah Carroll, Foundation Governor

Sarah was appointed as a Foundation Governor in 2022. She works as Trust Lead for Personal Development and Enterprise for the national multi-academy trust, Aldridge Education. Sarah has also served as a community governor on the board of the Liverpool Women’s Hospital and undertakes ad hoc consultancy work for School Improvement Liverpool. She holds a Masters in Education and a National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership (NPQSL)

 

Amelia Southward, Co-opted Governor

Amelia was appointed as a Co-opted Governor in 2024. She is a qualified chartered accountant working as a financial accountant for INOVYN, part of the global chemical company, INEOS.  A former Carmel student, Amelia left the college in 2016 to attend the University of Liverpool where she graduated with an LLB in Law with Accountancy and Finance.

Mark Dawson, Parent Governor

Mark was appointed as a Parent Governor in 2021. He is a senior commercial manager within the UK operation of global construction firm, ISG, with specific expertise in risk management, procurement and strategic planning. Having started out as a quantity surveyor, in recent years Mark has been involved in the recruitment, selection and training of students for apprenticeships and graduate programmes within the construction industry.

 

John Fogarty, Foundation Governor

John was first appointed as a Foundation Governor in 2003 and was most recently re-appointed in 2023. He is a qualified accountant with significant senior public sector and local authority experience. He is currently the Executive Director of Corporate Services at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

Janet Gater, Principal

Janet took up post as Principal in August 2023 when she also became an ex officio member of the Governing Body. Janet has had a long and varied professional background at Carmel College, where she has been a teacher, Head of Department, Assistant Principal and Vice Principal.

Sue Jarvis, Co-opted Governor

Sue was first appointed as a Co-opted Governor in 2019 and was re-appointed for a second term in 2023. She is a Co-Director at the Heseltine Institute for Public Policy, Practice and Place within the University of Liverpool. Her professional background is in local government practice and public policy, with her research interests including regional and local economic development and skills strategies.

Andrew Jones, Co-opted Governor

Andrew was first appointed as a Co-opted Governor in 2017 and was re-appointed for a second term in 2021. He is Director of Welfare and Care at Nautilus International, a trade union and professional organisation serving maritime professionals and retired and needy seafarers and their dependents. His background is in the healthcare, hospitality and charitable sectors, with specific experience in governance, project management, quality assurance, facilities management and health and safety. He holds a Masters in Business Administration, NEBOSH diploma and is a chartered member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Andrew is also a qualified coach and mentor.

Remuneration, Search Mick was first appointed as a Foundation Governor in 2018 and was re-appointed for a second term in 2022. Prior to retirement, Mick was Head of Physics at Carmel where he also held a variety of senior leadership roles including Assistant Principal and Ofsted nominee. During his professional career, Mick sat on a number of working groups aimed at widening participation in higher and further education. He was also a board member of the St Helens Careers Service and Local Connexions.

Kieran O’Sullivan, Associate Member

Kieran was appointed as an Associate Member in December 2023 with membership of the Quality & Standards Committee.  He is the UK Recruitment Manager at the University of Liverpool, responsible for recruiting UK students to undergraduate and postgraduate courses.  Kieran has a variety of governance experience including being the Chair of Governors at The Belvedere Academy and a Director and Trustee of the Academy Trust Board of the Girls Day School Trust from 2019 to 2023. Kieran is also the professional services representative on the University of Liverpool’s governing body, the University Council, a position he has held since 2018.

Andrew was first appointed as a Foundation Governor in 2019 and was re-appointed for a second term in 2023. He is the Headteacher of De La Salle secondary school in St Helens, a key Catholic feeder school into the College.

Leigh Rice, Associate Member

Leigh was appointed as an Associate Member in 2022 with membership of the Quality & Standards Committee. A former student of Carmel and law graduate, she is a Student Success Tutor at the University of Leeds (School of Law) where she works directly with law students to assist in the dissemination of academic and employability skills. Leigh also teaches Law modules at the University.

Naheem Shafiq, Associate Member

Naheem was first appointed as an Associate Member in 2019 and was re-appointed for a second term in 2023. He is a Finance Manager within Halton Borough Council and sits on the Finance & Resources Committee. Naheem has Fellow Chartered and Certified Accountant (FCCA) status.

Graeme was appointed as a Foundation Governor in 2022. He is a Project Director at HM Revenue and Customs where he is responsible for leading teams and delivering key strategic projects. He is a Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) with the Association of Project Management.

Helen was appointed as a Foundation Governor in 2021, having previously served on the governing body until 2017. She is a founding Director of Satis Education, an education consultancy and leadership recruitment firm. She is a former teacher and senior leader with a National Professional Qualification in Headship (NPQH) and was previously the Director of Development and Governance at a large multi-academy trust.
