Congratulations to Carmel’s former Student President, Eva Carroll, who has been selected as a UK Delegate for the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
The Commission on the Status of Women is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Eva says.. “Usually I would have had to travel to New York to attend the conference but due to the pandemic all events are accessible online. This means I get to attend specialist roundtables and events based on my areas of interest as well as side events on gender equality.
“I am super excited to represent the UK in what is an incredible opportunity to make the world a better place for women!”
Eva will be attending an annual two-week session, with representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities. During these sessions they will discuss progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. They will also address key global policy document on gender equality, and the 23rd special session of the General Assembly held in 2000 (Beijing+5), as well as emerging issues that affect gender equality and the empowerment of women. Member States then agree on further actions to accelerate progress and promote women’s enjoyment of their rights in political, economic, and social fields. The outcomes and recommendations of each session are then followed up.
This is a fantastic achievement and we look forward to following your journey!
