Current Year Zero degree student, Jade Friday, gives us an insight into what it’s like to return to education after working for eighteen months…

“I was a registered nurse for a year and half before I applied for the Year Zero course in Medicine at Carmel College. I spent time working on an acute major trauma ward, where I was privileged to nurse patients through some of their lowest periods of their lives; usually after sustaining multiple, complex injuries, some of which were life-changing.

It was after working in a hospital environment that I decided to go back to education to become a doctor. I really wanted to further my knowledge on the human body, pathology and pharmacology. I wanted to be able to provide patients with my own holistic care plans and to be able to investigate, prescribe and coordinate a patient’s treatment in order to fully mould a patient’s journey.

At the beginning of the course, I was incredibly nervous about going back into education, and I was worried that I wouldn’t be “clever enough” to succeed. However, the teaching and the support at Carmel has been fantastically delivered. I have enjoyed all my lessons here so much that my confidence and my grades have really improved over the course of the year.

I now feel fully prepared to continue my studies at the University of Liverpool. I have gained all the knowledge and skills I need to fulfil my ambition of becoming a doctor. I cannot thank the Year Zero staff enough for helping me achieve this!”
