Why should I take the BTEC Double Award?
Most drama and dance schools and universities which offer performance courses, are much more interested in your ability to perform and how well you do in an audition rather than grades in academic based subjects. The practical element of this course gives you the opportunity to learn performance skills which you will need in order to pass the auditions required for university or specialist courses.
The Double Award also involves a lot of performances as the basis for your development. Over the two years you will be involved in many performance pieces including dances, plays, musicals along with tours, trips, workshops and visits plus smaller college pieces all of which provide you with the training you need to become successful in the performing arts.
The big benefit of the dual award as opposed to a full time course as offered in some institutions, is the ability to choose a further A Level to complement the double award. For example; you could take the double award along with A Level Drama, Music or Graphics. The Double award is equivalent to 2 A Levels, leaving the scope to also study any additional A Level alongside it which keeps your options open and a breadth of study either contrasting or complementing the Double award.
In order to maintain the high quality of performance at Carmel, applicants will be invited to an informal workshop to ensure all the students have the necessary level of skill and significantly, the commitment to the course required to succeed.
The workshop will consist of a variety of performance based exercises including physical theatre, devising, movement and voice. We expect our students to have a variety of skills on offer so are looking at potential as well as skill.
The areas we most want to see in our prospective students are:
- The ability to focus and concentrate
- Commitment to the subject and lots of enthusiasm
- The ability to work in groups and solo, offering ideas and collaboration
- Performance ability in terms of flair
- Performance ability in terms of technique
- The ability to take direction
